Agricultural Tests Offered Through Office
We offer a variety of tests at the Shawnee County Office. Click on the drop-down boxes to learn more about the various exams we offer and types of samples that can be tested through our Office!
Private Pesticide Applicator License Exam
All Private Pesticide Applicator Exams now only available by appointment on the first and last Monday of each month!
- The KDA provides certification for private and commercial applicators to use pesticides, and our Office serves as a testing site. Please call the KDA Office (785-564-6688) to confirm that the Private Pesticide Applicator Exam is the correct certification to apply for with your specific situation or your specific chemical.
- To register to create an appointment to take the exam and to receive more information, call 785-232-0062
- Please bring a check or money order made out to the Kansas Department of Agriculture (KDA) for $25.
- The Private Pesticide Applicator Manual is available online for free. The Office also has hard-copy manuals on hand that can be purchased. Please call Office for current price!
Nuisance Wildlife Damage Control Exam
All Nuisance Wildlife Damage Control Exams now only available by appointment on the first and last Mondays of the month!
- Our office is a testing site for the nuisance wildlife damage control exam for permit applicants. The office will send the information to the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks.
- To register to create an appointment to take the exam and to receive more information, call 785-232-0062
- Please bring a form of identification (driver’s license, passport, or other form of valid ID)

Soil Testing for Fields and Pastures
There are a variety of testing elements (such as pH, phosphorous (P), potassium (K), organic matter (OM), zinc (Zn), or nitrogen (N)) that can be tested for.
- Please call or stop by the Office to receive instructions on how to properly collect a soil sample, transport a soil sample, and what tests to select for your pasture or crop type.
- The Office also provides soil probes for checkout, which help to ensure that the soil profile is sampled evenly from top to bottom.
- There is a $20 deposit fee for shorter probes or a $50 deposit fee for checking out the deep probe that is returned once probes are brought back to the Office.

Plant Diagnostic Lab (For Diseased or Unhealthy Crops)
- Please bring physical samples of the plant in question into the Extension Office
- We will fill out an intake sheet and box up the plant
- The plant owner will take the sample to the Post Office to ship out to the K-State Soil Testing Laboratory
- Visit the K-State Plant Disease Diagnostic Lab website for instructions on sample shipping and collection

- Pictures of a problematic crop plant can also be emailed to agettinger@ksu.edu for free for an initial assessment by the K-State Plant Disease Diagnostic Lab
Plant, Forage, and Grain Analysis (Nutrient Analysis)
- Note: it is recommended that individuals who are wishing to have an in-depth forage analysis that includes crude protein, dry matter, total digestible nutrients, etc. utilize a private, nationally certified laboratory instead of the K-State Soil Testing Laboratory
- Please bring physical samples of desired plants into the Extension Office
- We will fill out an intake sheet and box up the plant
- The plant owner will take the sample to the Post Office to ship out to the K-State Soil Testing Laboratory
